Accelerating exponentially quicker than in previous centuries, scientific and technological progress has been made in the last century. This shift will impact every aspect of society and education. The changes that have occurred have had the most significant effect on our species, especially regarding our health and biological life as humans living in advanced civilizations. The pharmaceutical functions that aid patients in recovering from illness or disease have significantly benefited from the advancements in science and technology during the past few decades. Suppose a cardiac or respiratory arrest occurs when the patient has a Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) order on file. In that case, medical personnel is instructed not to perform chest compressions or other lifesaving treatments. Only after consulting with their doctor can patients receive a DNR, and even then, it does not include other treatment suggestions.
Ethical dilemmas occur while treating a patient with a do-not-resuscitate order when it is unclear whether or not the patient has the mental capacity to make such a decision. One man in Florida in 2017 was taken to the hospital after being found unconscious with a "do-not-resuscitate" tattoo on his chest. As a result of this incident, several doctors have begun to wonder whether or not tattoos of this kind are ever acceptable in their field (Buchbinder, Shanks, and Kite 2019). Although the man could not communicate vocally due to the severity of his condition, the intensive care unit's medical staff decided to show respect for his tattoo and its symbolism (Chiruvella & Guddati 2021). In other cases, "the law is not agile enough to allow patient-centered therapy and care for patient's best interests," the ethics advices so.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act clarifies that healthcare providers face legal and ethical risks when they breach patients' right to confidentiality (HIPPA). Patient medical records must be kept confidential and secure at all times under the act's requirements. In addition, HIPPA specifies who is allowed and who is not allowed access to patients' PHI (Farrell & Saliba 2020). While the legislation may look straightforward at first glance, ambiguities sometimes exist. Withholding information concerning a patient's condition when doing so could endanger the patient or others are unethical.
However, the inverse can also be dangerous. Any medical staff member, including doctors and nurses, publicly discussing a patient's condition on social media runs the risk of being penalized or even fired (Buchbinder, Shanks, and Kite 2019). Health information cannot be disclosed on social media due to HIPPA rules. This rule is because any breach of a patient's privacy, no matter how accidental, is cause for immediate alarm. Recently published data in the journal BMJ indicates that medical errors account for 3.5% of all deaths yearly in the United States. Although the frequency of malpractice claims has decreased, those injured due to medical negligence may never fully recover. Certain people may need a few years.
Malpractice is more common in the healthcare sector because of the inherent dangers of the work. Administrators, like doctors and nurses, must ensure they are doing their fundamental duties to avoid legal trouble. Typical sloppiness in hospitals can show in several ways, including the use of outdated or malfunctioning technology, incorrect diagnoses, and inappropriate treatment durations (Brock 2018). Though symptoms of illness can manifest in seemingly illogical ways, a doctor will only actively look for them once asked. When doctors have different opinions on whether or not specific procedures are necessary for optimal therapy, the boundaries between what is and is not acceptable
