Chronic illness in childhood has an effect on the functioning of the family, and professional support is needed when the child is being cared for at home. Caring for the children suffering from chronic illness is a life-changing process for the parents that stir up emotional responses to parents marked by substantial stress and feelings of uncertainty. The major concern of this study is the nursing involvement to support the families who have children with chronic illness. A Chronic illness refers to a mental or physical condition, that has an effect on the everyday functioning of individuals for a period exceeding three months in a year, or for a hospitalization period exceeding a month. Examples of chronic infections are eczema, psoriasis, asthma, cancer, dermatitis, heart conditions, cystic fibrosis, Down’s syndrome, diabetes, juvenile arthritis, chronic renal insufficiency, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, anemia, and leukemia. Other physical handicaps can include burns and deformities. This, therefore, limits the child from taking part in normal activities. A family is a group of people entailing one or more adults and their children, who they take care of. Stress is a feeling of anxiety and strain or any obnoxious feeling and emotion (Knafl K., Deatrick J., 1987). The paper will discuss the patient’s right and dignity involved informed decision, communication and privacy and confidentiality.
