Orthostatic Hypotension
Orthostatic hypotension, known colloquially as dizzy spell or head rush occurs when an individual’s blood pressure falls suddenly while stretching or standing up. Orthostatic hypotension is usually mild. It lasts a few minutes after one stands or stretches (Massachusetts Medical Society, & Audio-Digest Foundation, 2006). Long-lasting condition of the hypotension could be a sign of serious medical symptoms. Symptoms of the condition are as a result of blood pooling in one’s lower externalities upon a change of position of the body. It is common and can occur in anyone, but is particularly prevalent among the old and those suffering from low blood pressure (Massachusetts Medical Society, & Audio-Digest Foundation, 2006).
For one suffering from orthostatic hypotension, dysphoria or euphoria and dizziness are among the most common symptoms upon sudden stretching or standing (Massachusetts Medical Society, & Audio-Digest Foundation, 2006). Additionally, one suffers distorted hearing, bodily dissociation and nausea. Lightheadedness, headaches, seizure and pain centered in the shoulders and the neck are usually common as well. In rare cases, one may suffer from vasovagal syncope, numbness, momentary blindness and even fainting (Massachusetts Medical Society, 2011).
