This is a reflective essay based on the management of a patient that I was directly involved. In this essay, the privacy and confidentiality of patient information will be maintained and strictly regarded. This is based on the Nursing and midwifery council (NMC) guidelines on prioritising people. It states that it is important to “respect people’s right to privacy and confidentiality” (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2015). The code further states that it is essential to “notify the patient about the care they are receiving and share information about them appropriately”. As a result, I am going to use a pseudonym while referring to the patient in question throughout this essay. In accordance to this order, the patient will be referred to as Mrs Brown
This reflection is about Mrs Brown aged 65 years, who had been admitted for an extensive period for the management of her deteriorating COPD. She had spent the last eight weeks in hospitalisation while receiving integrated multidisciplinary care. These include physiotherapy, medical care and nursing care. She was due for discharge, and the multidisciplinary health team were involved in her care and discharge process. This was in order to ensure she gained independence and successfully blended back into the society. This incident of care will be reviewed by the use of up to date healthcare policies and references. I will analyse the functions of the multidisciplinary team geared towards the care of Mrs Brown. I will also be considering the impact of social, political and legal factors on patient care. I will also recount on the maintenance of patient safety, application of risk assessment guidelines, care delivery, patient prioritisation, teamwork and delegation in the care of Mrs Brown. All these will be in accordance with the NMC codes of conduct and the ingredients which make up excellent healthcare systems management.
