Contemporary designs may refer to building schemes stemming from a wide range of influences. Contemporary designs include the modern designs of the late 20th century by embracing creativity and inclusion of eco-friendly features (Craig 2010). Apart from exploring unique styles and influences, contemporary designs explore the use of modern technology and materials. The designs are expressive, innovative, creative, noticed, and appreciated (Craig 2010). The history of architecture cannot be traced without a mention of the famous Robert Venturi. Venturi was an influential American architect and theorists whose books and buildings facilitated the shift towards postmodernism (Bernstein 2018). He developed several contemporary designs before meeting his death. Venturi created several principles that can be used to analyze architecture effectively (Venturi 1992). Therefore, the motive is to apply the set of principles created by Robert Venturi to outline the visual analysis of Computer House of Tilt, Belgium.
Computer House of Tielt, Belgium was created in 2009. The major idea behind the design was office or storefront. The building presented many unique, impressive features; however, it expressed some architectural complexities. Rober Venturi outlined principles that look into the complexity of designs. Usually, complex designs attract a lot of contradiction (Venturi 1992). The primary source of Computer House contradiction and complexity is on its twin structures. The building consists of two large blocks occupying the spaces of the building. The blocks are connected by a courtyard and a parking space. Well, the building is applauded for its practical construction materials. Nonetheless, the critique and contradiction is on the idea of creating two big structures instead of one. The manner in which Compute House fits in the urban setting is strange, thereby showing poor architectural planning. However, according to Allinson, contemporary design denotes a simple structure that is easy to understand (Allinson 2007). Looking at the way the cubes of Compute House are walled with complex elements of the courtyard within the urban sprawl, it is with no doubt saying that the design contradicts simplicity. The walls of the cube buildings are straight in such a way that they contradict the angular design of courtyard walls. As a result, their connection does not show any geometric or angular shapes that are essential in architecture, thereby making the courtyard to look more traditional than postmodern and contemporary.
The mixed-use of architecture is a practice used in the development of buildings and spaces that have multiple uses. The mixed-use architecture is an idea used in improving the value of developments and quality of life of the common urban design goals. Multiple uses is an aspect explored in the Computer House (Geers 2017). The areas of the building are well-defined in terms of the usage, including some with less expected usage. The computer house presents two main blocks. One block is the primary structure of a customer area, and the other is the main building that comprises of a technical area. Nonetheless, the facility also comprises of unusually
