SWOT Analysis on Samsung.
Abstract
A SWOT analysis refers to an analysis conducted on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats faced by an organization or company.
This essay will assess the strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats faced by the supply chain of the Samsung under the Samsung Group. Samsung was founded in 1969 in Suwon, Korea and is considered to be one of the most successful brands in the world.
Introduction
Much has changed in supply chain of the company and much of that change can be attributed to the globalization and the advancement of technology. The skills and technology that is currently available to the company now, was nothing short of a dream in the early stages of development of the company.
As with most things, the changes that the supply chain of the company has experienced has had a positive and negative impact and has all played a role in the development of the supply chain, its strengths, its weakness, the opportunities that are available as well as the aspects that pose a threat to the supply chain of the company.
Main
The SWOT analysis of the company can be defined as follows.
1 Strengths
The transformation of the supply chain of the company can be mostly attributed to the company’s second Chairman, Lee Kun-Hee who became chairman after succeeding his father the founder. Mr Kun-Hee implemented many changes and reinforced various aspects of the supply chain which did not only better the supply chain of his company, but transformed the supply chain of the whole industry. One of the key transformations implemented by Mr Kun-Hee that later became a strength of not only the supply chain of the company but the company as well, is the fact that the company does not outsource as much of its components, compared to its competitors. This becomes a strength of the supply chain because the company is able to control the processes that lead to assembly and can schedule to deliver to customers quicker than their competitors.
2 Weaknesses
A weakness in the supply chain of Samsung is that because the company operates globally, the supply chain spans over several countries and several continents. This may cause communication problems as well as delivery issues and will therefore become a weakness in the supply chain of the company.
3 Opportunities
Since Samsung does not outsource many of its components there are opportunities for the company to expand through distributing the components they produce to other companies.
4 Threats
As said above, the advancement of technology has had a great impact on the supply chain of Samsung. When it comes to technological progression and supply chains, evidence suggests that as technology advances, supply chains improve. However, as technology advances consumers demand increases, consumers demand the latest technology which puts a strain on companies such as Samsung. Samsung recently recalled one of its mobile phones as the battery was said to blow up, such is due to companies rolling out new devices quicker than their technology and capacity can allow. In this regard, technology poses a threat to the supply chain.
