Domestic Violence against Women
Domestic violence takes place amid people who are in an intimate relationship. This kind of violence serves as a universal issue trans-versing across nationwide boundaries and racial, cultural, socio-economic, and class distinctions. Geographically, this particular problem is extensively disseminated. Apart from that, its incidence is also widespread, thus making it an archetypal and established behaviour. Intimate partner violence is not only prevalent, but it is also deeply entrenched and has adverse impacts on the well-being and health of women. The sustained existence of this type of violence is ethically indefensible. Its cost to society, to health systems and to individuals is immense. Yet, no other major public health problem has been so extensively disregarded and so little comprehended as this.
Intimate partner violence can take place in both same-sex or heterosexual relationships. Relationships that are abusive in nature always encompass control and power imbalance. The frequency of this type of violence can either be off, on, chronic or occasional. Besides, this kind of violence is not basically a disagreement, but it is a pattern of intimidating control that one individual exercises over another. As a way to control their preys and get their way, abusers employ sexual and physical vehemence, emotional insults, threats as well as economic deprivation (Akhmedshina,2020). As much as domestic violence is perpetrated on both women and men, the victims of this type of violence are most commonly women.
Domestic violence against the female gender is an age-old phenomenon. Since time immemorial, females have always been deliberated to be susceptible, weak and in a position to be oppressed. It has long been accepted that violence happens to women. As much as acts of violence are choices that individuals make out of a range of options, other factors such as religious practices, cultural mores, political and economic conditions are responsible for setting the precedence for initiating and perpetuating domestic violence (Krahe, 2018). The gender imbalance that is showcased in this type of violence is partly associated with differences in size and physical strength. Besides, women tend to be socialized into their femininity roles/duties in varied societies across the globe.
In societies that have rigid gender roles as well as male-controlled power structure, ladies are often ill-equipped to guard themselves if their spouses become ferocious. Nevertheless, much of the inequality correlates to how depending on men and fearfulness result in cultural disarmament. Typically, those men who batter their spouses feel that by doing so, they are exercising a right, punishing the delinquency of their wives and upholding good order in the family. Globally, it is estimated that 736 million women have been subjected to non-partner sexual violence, intimate partner violence, or both at least once in their life (Ashraf et al., 2017). In the year 2018, a projected one in seven ladies had experienced sexual or physical violence from a husband of an intimate partner in the previous six months. Apart from that, calls to helplines have escalated five-fold in some nations as rates of domestic violence upsurge due to the Covid-19 epidemic.
Underpinning Theories
Feminist Theory versus Social Learning Theory
The feminist theory is based on the principle that intimate partner violence results from male repression of females within a male-controlled system in which the male gender serves as the primary committers of this type of violence while women are the primary preys. This theory compares to the social learning theory in that they both believe that domestic violence results from both historical and current power differentials that keep the female gender subordinate (Gimenez, 2018). According to social learning theory, abusive and violent adults learned this particular behaviour as a result of being either witnesses or victims of abusive and aggressive behaviour as children (Rumjaun at el., 2020). According to various studies, women are the most victims of gender violence. It is most probable that men who abuse their spouses
