Database Normalization
Database normalization is the grouping of data in a database to reduce data redundancy. This involves separating large data tables into much smaller and less redundant tables. The objective of this is to isolate data so that insertions, deletion, and modifications made on a particular field in the database can be reflected in the whole database using established relationships.
Database normalization is essential as it eliminates data redundancy by storing and mapping data logically (Wang et al. 42). With database normalization, the organization can adequately store and organize its information without duplicates and outdated versions. It also minimizes and avoids data modification by increasing security and ensuring accuracy in locating data, facilitating data connection recognition, and reducing information inconsistency and inaccessibility within the database. Moreover, database normalization simplifies queries and saves on costs, making database maintenance more manageable and speeds up data sources’ connection to any internal or external systems as data can be accurately transferred without revisions.
