Compare and Contrast: Pride & Prejudice – Bride & Prejudice
Pride & Prejudice (2005) and Bride & Prejudice (2004) are two movies based on the novel by Jane Austen “Pride and Prejudice” written in 1813. Before the 2005 version, there was another American version filmed in 1940. Pride & Prejudice is a product of American cinema while Bride & Prejudice is a Bollywood movie. This essay aims to compare and contrast the two movies in terms of subject matter, atmosphere, statements, and influence by the artistic interpretation.
Both movies discuss the delicate subject of marriage in conservative societies and between different classes. Pride and Prejudice evolves in the English countryside in the early 19th century and Bride & Prejudice in a contemporary Indian city. The plot develops around two families with daughters of marrying age. The pressure is placed upon the two elder daughters to marry, not only to open the way to their sisters but to improve the financial status of the families by marrying a wealthy man. Both the English and Indian families are middle class, the father is the dominant figure, but the mother is the leader of the household. They can afford servants and have a decent lifestyle, but there is always room for improvement. Also, the sisters have been raised in a loving environment and learned to care for each other.
