The Rise of the Guitar Hero
The Monterey Pop Festival that was held in June 1967 changed the growth of rock music in both the entertainment world and in culture. It served as a baseline for future rock concerts including Woodstock (Sisario). The Monterey Pop Festival gave an opportunity to 'The Who', and Jimi Hendrix, among other rock artists, to make it to the American mainstream arena. This essay will cover the differences and similarities between the performance of Jimi Hendrix and 'The Who' at the Monterey Pop Festival. The significance of each performance and how it impacted their careers is also explained.
Jimi Hendrix and ‘The Who’ were similar in several ways. Their performances were both electric and charged. They raised the tempo of the place and got the crowd electrified. They also both destroyed their equipment on stage after the performance. The two performances also had several differences. The sound of Jim Hendrix during the performance was different. It was “gnarled, raw, woolly, untamed” (Battaglia). He had great control of feedback, and stood strategically in a way that enabled him to obtain different sound during the performance.‘The Who’ has a sound that was “charged and confrontational” (Whatley). Jimi's sound was at a lower level as compared to 'The Who'. 'The Who' were chaotic and loud. Moreover, Jim played only the guitar, while 'The Who' played drum kits, bass, and the guitar.
