Definition of Pollination and Why it is Important to the Environment
Pollination can be defined as transfer of pollen grains with a purpose of creating the next offspring, from the anthers to the stigma of a flower. Plants use their flowers to make seeds. These seeds contain the necessary genetic matter needed in the production of a new plant. Pollination comes to play because a flower can only produce a seed when pollen grains are successfully transferred among various flowers within a similar species CITATION Jan05 \l 1033 (Janet Marinelli).
There are mainly two types of pollination, self and cross pollination. While self-pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anthers to the stigma within the same flower, cross pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anthers to the stigma of one flower to another flower within the same plant of to another plant but of the same species CITATION Eli11 \l 1033 (Eilers). For successful pollination, there are various pollinators of vectors that facilitate the process. They include animals, birds, insects, water and wind.
