Global Food Waste and Possible Solutions.
Nearly a third of the food produced globally ends up being wasted, resulting in losses amounting to about $750 billion annually. This has caused stakeholders in the agricultural sector to find ways of reducing wastage. Food waste occurs due to various reasons depending on specific conditions and the local situation in a particular country. In high-income countries, food waste is mainly caused by consumer behavior and regulatory policies, while in low- income countries, it is caused by technical limitations. As such, low-income countries should focus on improving their technical abilities, while high-income countries should focus on consumer behaviour and regulatory frameworks in the food sector.
In low-income countries, food waste mainly occurs during transit from the farmer to the consumer. The key to reducing food waste in low-income countries is increased investments in infrastructure. For example, farmers should be provided with solar-powered refrigerators to reduce the amount of food waste during storage.
