Integrating critical thinking standards into daily business practices
Introduction
Critical thinking involves rationality. A human being in his nature is believed to be selfish; most of his thinking left unchecked always tends to be biased. Our future and the future of our businesses depend on our present thoughts and acts. What we think we become shoddy thinking costs a lot regarding either money or the future life. Therefore, there is a need for critical thinking. Critical thinking is self-guided, it includes the component skills to evaluate and analyze an idea before accepting it, skills to assess an idea to understand it clearly (Feldman 76). Critical thinkers rely on reason rather than emotion; they are open to new ideas and perspectives, they are willing to challenge their beliefs and investigate competing evidence, they recognize the human thinking nature of biasness, and they always remain open to alternative interpretations. Researchers suggest that people develop critical thinking when they are very young, but it is still possible to teach adults how to think critically (Feldman 83).
This paper study analyzes the ways in which leaders can integrate the critical thinking in the workplace, ways to unleash and increase critical thinking as well as, the benefits of critical thinking in an organization.
Leadership plays a critical role in building a culture of reasoned thinking’s and evidence-based inquiry. Without critical thinkers, an organization success chances are very low especially.
Ways of unleashing and increasing critical thinking in an organization
To motivate employees to think critically, the leader should be ready to reward critical thoughts. The disposition to think critically has been defined as the “consistent internal motivation to engage problems and make decisions by using critical thinking” (Pigza 37).Also, the leaders need to act on the employees critical suggestions. Otherwise, they will take it as a waste of time if after all their creative suggestions is never implemented. To kick-start the critical thinking, the manager can set goals for the employees to come up with ways of making the processes more effective and efficient ways. After receiving all the suggestions, the leader should assess them and choose the best. Then he should reward the employee with the best idea and finally implement the idea (Pigza 35).
Another way in which a leader can ensure critical thinking in an organization is by forming innovation teams, each innovation team should be given the challenge to formulate a method that can help the organization reduce costs as well increase profits (Pigza 36). The teams should be given a timeline after which they submit their ideas to be assessed. The team with the best idea gets a rewarded, and the management implements the idea.
Diversity among the employees encourages critical thinking. Management needs to ensure their employees come from different backgrounds; they have different qualifications and experiences. Diversity creates room for creativity and development (McVey 87). Management should ensure the diversified employees mingle around in every organization activity. Researchers have noted that an individual may exhibit critical thinking skills and abilities in one context, or domain, but fail to do so in another.
The management should provide a positive working environment for their employees. Too serious leadership hinders employees’ creativity; employees’ creativity depends largely on their mood. Pressurized employees fell stressed, and they only look forward to the end of the day (Feldman 133). To tap the employee’s creativity, organization leaders need to create a positive work environment. The management should incorporate fun into the work through establishing team bonding activities such as debates or retreats every once in a while.
Brainstorming sessions among the employees spur creativity; the organization leaders take the ideas raised and analyze them. However there are some employees who would like confidentiality and anonymity, management should provide an alternate way such as a suggestion box (McVey 93).
Critical thinking forces both the organizational leaders and employees to assess a situation and evaluate all available solutions before making the final decision. Critical thinking is a process, and it requires more than an individual input. The benefits associated with the practice make it worth.
