Brave New World
In chapter seventeen of his book, Aldous Huxley discusses the relevance of the future. John the Savage makes an argument in favor of religion, art and science in the lives of humans. Mustapha Mond argues that in a world where there is no loss, old age and death, humans were less likely to be inclined towards. He also argues that religion matters to people because they have been conditioned to believe so from an early age. By making this claim, the author postulates that people will increasingly become less religious over the course of time. On this claim, the writer is partly correct in that in the West, young people are today less likely to be religiously inclined than any other time in recorded history. Part of the reasons for irreligiousness is the fact that people live longer and more ‘assuredly’ than they could at any other time in history. This is attributable to medical inventions that have eliminated the risk of previously fatal or incapacitating diseases such as small pox or polio.
The writer is also correct when he imagines a less religious world on account of rising incomes and prosperity. When one compares religiosity among nations, one discovers that there is a correlation between high average national incomes and decline in religion and high religiosity and low average national incomes.
