Pseudo Listening
I was involved in pseudo-listening during an extended family meeting dinner to plan for Christmas celebrations. Pseudo-listening involves pretending to listen while not being fully attentive (LOUIS). The meeting happens each year, where the chairperson assigns different tasks to each member to facilitate the celebrations. Despite nodding my head and laughing while everyone laughed, my mind was thinking about an upcoming end-of-year workplace presentation, which I had not yet completed. I realized that I was pseudo-listening when asked a question, and I had to request the chairperson to repeat the question since I was not fully attentive.
Defensive Listening
I engaged in defensive listening during a conversation with my sister, as I perceived an attack where there was none. We had just repaired our washing machine after having an argument where we blamed each other for its damage. During my sister’s turn to do the laundry, she called me into the laundry room, and as soon as she said my name, I thought the machine was damaged, and she blamed me again. I walked in complaining, but she told me she could not find a pair of my socks and asked for help locating them. I felt embarrassed because I had been listening defensively.
