The use of power in the global communication
Lerner’s theory
David Lerner, an American scholar, is the proponent of the modernization theory which conceptualize cultural imperialism. The study of this renowned scholar is critical in explaining how the United States use its power in the global communication to perpetuate cultural and economic imperialism in the developing nations. According to Lerner, communication is very instrumental in the transformation of the traditional societies. Lerner’s transition model conceptualize the manifestation of the use of power in global communication in the modern society (Lasswell, 2017). The model idealize the changes in the society as contributed to the imperialism in the global communication. Lerner gives an account of a Turkish vegetable seller and a chief who exemplified the use of power in the traditional societal set up. The grocer used the power of communication to acquire valuable modern items while the leader focused on the local community as the subjects. Lerner postulates that modern people depend more on media than the family for information. They also rely more on scientific descriptions than religious paradigms. The communication is a powerful tool in understanding global issues. People in the modern society prefer international issues to local matters. Communication’s power enables people to venture outside their local confines and interact at the global arena (Stager, 2017). Transition in the global communication has been fueled through the use of media such as newspapers, radio, and film among others. Communication is used as a persuasive tool by powerful nations to change people in the Third world countries. The imperialists use the power of communication in form of news to pass their ideologies to people in the third world countries.
