Some television shows commentators have argued that most female characters in Supernatural never go beyond the role of mother, love interest, daughter, and damsel save for a few exceptions. Supernatural, like other TV shows, is masculine in its depiction of characters. Over time, there have been a fair number of female cast, yet they all share a similar fate –they both serve limited roles as evident in their invisibility in the story. This paper argues that CW Network’s Supernatural’s masculine narrative portrays men as heroes while women are represented as dependent on the fates and whims of men.
Most women characters in Supernatural often meet their doom, save for the dominant male characters of Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki). Other recurring characters –demon Crawley (Mark Sheppard) and angel Castiel (Misha Collins) are men.
Even for the strongest women hunters who fight supernatural beings just like the protagonists Sam and Dean, they still meet a gruesome end. The fringe female characters who survive the evil beings have to be rescued by the protagonists.
