NASA has recorded millions of technology spin-off in various sectors including in the health sector. Some of the notable spinoffs from the shuttle in the medical sector include the implantable heart resynchronization device. The implantable heart resynchronization device was partially developed from the on space shuttle fuel pump technology (Lockney 1-10). Accordingly, a small implantable heart pumps to-date have been implanted successfully on thousands of patients all over the world. The heart pump that has proved to be a lifesaving device is purposely designed to prolong the life of patient waiting for a heart transplant. The device was developed through the teamwork between NASA, MicroMed Technology Inc., Dr. George Noon, and Dr. Michael DeBakey.
The device referred to as “MicroMed DeBakey VAD" can used as an enabler to the realization of a transplant. The mechanical process of pumping blood all over the body allowing patients that are critically ill to live until a donor is identified. The gadget’s dimensions are 1 inch by 3 inches and weighs less than 4 ounces, while the pump is roughly 10 percent of other presently trading pulsatile VADs. As a result, it is less invasive and perfect for children and young adults. Further, the gadget is able to function for 8 hours on batteries and this allows patients to remain mobile and independent when conducting their daily activities (DeBakey and Teitel 137-140).
