Alice’s hanging; A dreadful turn of events
It is on the fourth of July when Dana comes back to Welyn’s place. In this scene, Rufus looks compelled with exhaustion, but his age remains the same. Dana was away for three months when she comes back. After leading Dana to the barn, they find Alice hanging on a rope, dead. It is a traumatizing experience owing to Alice’s centrality to the story. It is difficult to comprehend the death of Alice, especially with her fight against Rufus selling children into slavery. Now, Rufus is not in the barn with Dana, and when he returns, he informs Dana that Alice committed suicide.
In the meantime, Sarah informs Dana that Alice committed suicide when Rufus sold Joe and Hagar into slavery. Grief had overwhelmed her and could only contemplate suicide. However, later, it turns out that Rufus was against Alice running away, and he had to take Hagar and Joe to his aunt in Baltimore so that she thought he took them into slavery. Dana accuses Rufus to have caused Alice’s death and says finding Hagar
