Being bilingual
Bilingual means that one is fluent and proficient in two languages. Bilingual usually is advantageous than the monolingual because of the benefits that arise from it. The benefits of bilingual include; Being bilingual you can be able to be employed when the company has opened up a branch where the language mostly spoken you are familiar with and no one in the organization knows, similarly bilingual individuals working at the main branch of the company can get promotion easily because they are able to advance the business globally (Stone et.al, 153). Another advantage is that the one can become a translator easily. While the disadvantage of being bilingual is that it takes a lot of time to learn and be fluent in it, there is possibility of translation errors in key decision required to be translated. In addition to that bilingual individuals have raised unemployment rate. In general, bilingual individuals are becoming more competitive in the job market because of their ability to communicate two language. Majority of the individuals who are able to communicate two language are immigrants who have made the job market competitive.
Most of the companies in U.S.A prefer to open branches globally since the objective of every company is profit seeking. Most companies have policies that the employees who have been in the main branch are the one who become managers in the new branches because of their experience in the operations of the company. So the employees who have an understanding of more than one language whereby in a particular region only the native language is widely spoken, will get the position of where the branch is being opened thereby increase in pay. Similarly, being bilingual implies that you can work any place where the languages which you understand are spoken. Maybe in that particular area, they offer the pay which is greater than the one which someone currently receives thereby enjoying pay rise (Paap et.al, 618). In a similar manner being bilingual eliminates the need of competition for work as people who don’t understand a particular language becomes redundant because they cannot communicate with the people who require being offered services.
Most of the companies want to penetrate to international markets because they want to reduce the competition provided by the domestic market. As most businesses’ policy is to keep their best employees and offer them the best position in the international market. Unless you are bilingual, then you cannot be offered such position because they believe that communication is the key to organization achievement of their goals and objectives (Hands field, 84). So the bilingual individuals who know the native language spoken by the people in the branch are the one offered such position. The company also prefer bilingual people because of their need to compete globally and generate more and more profit. This implies monolingual individuals will be centered at only one region without moving to other places.
Similarly, knowing more than one language provides an opportunity to be an interpreter or a translator. As U.S.A receives visitors globally day in day out who practice different cultural aspects and speak different languages. So when they arrive in the country, they need to have a mutual understanding of some of the issues discussed, so the interpreters are available to simplify the work (Stone et.al, 154). Interpreters usually earn a lot of money for being bilingual or multilingual because they are the ones who influence or affect the decision made by a person who is monolingual with regards to issues which may be discussed in a language which is unknown to him/her.
Disadvantages of being bilingual are that an interpretation of a wrong phrase in the critical decision may result in a significant loss of currency, clients, and many others. Bilingual individuals need to practice daily on the different languages which they are familiar with because "Practice makes perfect" which implies that lack of training can result to errors in interpretation of words. Also, the lack of time to practice make the interpreter forgets a language (Paap et.al, 625). Also learning this language results in mental fatigue. Consider learning Chinese, the way they write and speak may be so complicated to an ordinary person. Time taken to understand the bilingual language is lengthy. Most of the languages learned are not easy. Hence, they require total dedication of time which may not be available.
Understanding of more languages may have an effect of job redundancy whereby for example there are too many translators/interpreters in one region over the other (Bailey, 415). At the same time, they are reluctant to look for jobs elsewhere because of the pay which is considerably low.
So my argument is that one should be a bilingual because there are more advantages besides employment of being translators, jobs regarding the opening of new branches in the international market among others in that one can benefit as a result of traveling and tourism. Being bilingual is the best thing because in every s...
