Nickel and Dimed
Nickel and Dimed is a book written by Barbara Ehrenreich and published in the year 2001. The author of the book reveals America's low-wage in all tenacity and how ironic it is being nickel and dimmed in such unprecedented prosperity. It implies America's anxiety and its one thousand desperate plans for survival to its citizens. This paper is aimed at discussing the relevance of the book to America's class or economic system. The author will also recommend suggestions to the government on how to solve his obstinate problem.
In her well-narrated book, Ehrenreich talks about Millions of Americans who work full time all the year round but working for poverty level wages. In the year 1998, Ehrenreich was partly inspired by the rhetoric surrounding warfare reform which advised that any job can bring a better life, leading her to make the decision to join them (Barbara, 2010). But she was still wondering how one can survive on six to seven dollars an hour in America, let alone prospering.
