Sexuality and Spirituality
There is an undeniable link between our sexuality and spirituality as human beings. We are sexual beings and at the same time spiritual. This is the main similarity among all of us. There is absolutely no person who is spiritual but not sexual. "Sexuality and spirituality are two ways that we transcend our everyday physical reality. Indeed, there are links between our sexual and our spiritual passions, as the ecstatic rhythmic movements associated with some varieties of spiritual experience suggest" (Kurzweil 108). Spiritual people like nuns, priests and monks who are normally not sexually active remain to be sexual beings despite pledging themselves to celibate lifestyles. Also, there are no people who are sexual but not spiritual. Although some would argue that those who don’t believe in Jesus Christ are not spiritual, this is not true. However, this may be a valid definition of what Christianity entails but does not represent what spirituality actually is. I believe that we are all spiritual just by our being alive and not dependent on whether we embrace activities related to spirituality. All of us were created in the image and likeness of God whether we believe in God or not. This connection between spirituality and sexuality is explored in the book Brave New World.
In the book Brave New World, there are numerous changes in religion that were made by the world controllers. Even after these changes, the link between spirituality and sexuality is still intact. To begin with, a respected inventor of technology called Ford and a drug called soma that alters the state of one’s mind are made to take the place of God and the Ten Commandments as spelt out in Christianity. The traditional cross sign associated with Christianity is replaced with a deformed T sign that represents the T-Model that was invented by Ford. Therefore, the utopian society in the book engages in activities that support my argument that there is a connection between spirituality and sexuality. In this society, all people in the community are required to congregate for solidarity services instead of going for church services as is the norm with Christianity. They come together in groups of twelve so as to have a soma orgy. "The group was now complete, the solidarity circle perfect and without flaw. Man, woman, man, in a ring of endless alternation round the table. Twelve of them ready to be made one, waiting to come together, to be fused, to lose their twelve separate identities in a larger being" (Huxley 54). However, instead of waiting for the Almighty God to appear, they are busy waiting for the drug called soma that they use to experience an illusion of unlimited fortune which eventually leads to group sex. To me, this orgy is just a replacement of the sense of togetherness that people normally feel in the church. The twelve members participating in group sex (their religion) resembles the twelve apostles of God’s son, Jesus. Sex in this society therefore has been immersed in spirituality showing a strong link between them.
I also tend to think religion is a man’s construction to relief mankind of pain, suffering and reality. In our daily lives, we find people running to religion when they are faced with some form of suffering. Sick people are normally prayed for in the hope that they would be healed. Religion according to me is a man’s invention in the sense that there exist different forms of worship and not a conventional one that is common for all. We tend to cling to religion as it is the norm in our society today and that our parents and guardians have conditioned us to do so. The society in the book Brave New World for instance has invented a religion in which they worship Lord Ford. It is in their solidarity service that they take soma that creates ...
