For this paper, you will practice close reading as you write an essay summarizing and critiquing Edward Abbey’s essay “Eco-Defense.” A vigorous environmental activist, Abbey wrote the famous novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang (1975), in which eco-terrorists destroy property of road builders and other corporations he saw as endangering the natural landscape.
How to Summarize: As you summarize the author’s main points, remember to consolidate, leaving out small details and avoiding any repetition in the original source. Be sure to use transitions to tie ideas together and present the ideas in a logical order. Also, be sure to rely on your own wording unless you are quoting particularly lively or authoritative language. Use quotes sparingly (no more than two quotes).
How to Critique: As you respond to each main point, critique it by adding your own thoughts, as in a conversation. You might include points not considered by the author, analyze underlying implications the author is making, assess the effectiveness of the author’s evidence and reasoning, and/or state to what extent you agree or disagree with the author’s main ideas and why. Examine the author’s claims to get at deeper levels of underlying assumptions. Also be sure to evaluate the author’s rhetorical use of language (word choice, sentence style, repetition, parallelism).
