Essay on Rite of Passage
Boys and Girls a story was written and published in 1968, as it has been among 14 stories that form Alice Munro's first story collection, Dance of The Happy Shades while The Story of An Hour, a story was written by Kate Chopin. The first story is about a young girl that she was narrating some important events happened as she was expressing the changing that occurred to her as a young girl. Furthermore, it is a story about a girl that used to help her father for years every summer that she felt proud of doing it while she has begun to realize at some point that she was leaving her childhood and entering the womanhood. Moreover, in Boys and Girls, Munro perfectly captured a full picture of the environment, traditions, and concepts of this era as men upstaged mostly the whole picture and the boundaries were still surrounding the women. Besides the feeling of freedom, and the whispers of words "free, and soul free" that Mrs. Mallard kept whispering herself with after knowing her husband's death in Chopin's story.
Besides, Munro addressed the events that occur in the childhood period which are influenced by the society traditions so that in the end they shape adulthood. For example, when the son went with his father to hunt the mare and brought it back. Thus the son started to gain the courage and hardness to become a man while the girl went inside and reached her room. She realized that she cannot go with them as she is not supposed to do that because she is a woman.
