Culture, as a society’s characteristics and ways of life, is the foundation of societies and their people. Social transmission refers to passing cultural elements from one generation to another to be taught and passed down. This essay focuses on how language, tradition, and media transfer culture within societies, showing the importance of its cultivation by different societies. By studying these ways, we can uncover how societies maintain their cultural legacies and address emerging themes.
Oral and written language can be described as a primary means of cultural communication. Not only does it help in the process of exchanging information between individuals, but it also introduces patterns of behaviour and beliefs. Education enables societies to pass on languages and culture. For example, in education, historical events, literature, or societal values may be adopted in the curriculum, which assists in the development of the cultural identity of the learners (Mpuangnan and Ntombela 54). In this process, junior schools and universities are vital in maintaining linguistic and cultural literacy.
Consequently, cultural practices and ceremonies are relevant to culture passing. They are seen as activities that are continuously performed in a way that acknowledges cultural beliefs and expectations. For instance, annual festivals and religious rites reflect social identity and tradition across generations (Kameli 1). These practices help to create an identity and a feeling of togetherness since people are bound by culture and kinship to their fellow man. Weddings, burials, and harvest time sharing are social events and teachings that pass social norms and beliefs.
In today’s world, culture is widely transmitted through media and art. To some extent, motion pictures, writings, and other media mirror different cultural beliefs and can influence society’s norms. Media houses can impact cultural conceptions by selecting some elements and exposing them to others (Dembe 31). For instance, Hollywood movies provide representations of culture that either support or subvert cultural paradigms. Likewise, art movements and literary works are part of cultural experience and a significant part of the discourse on cultural identity.
