A Comparison Between McTeague and Tarzan of the Apes and their Vision Towards America and Americans Before World War One.
Originally published in 1899, McTeague: a story of San Francisco is a novel written by Frank Norris. The story is about love, marriage, poverty, and violence centered around McTeague, a dentist, and the book's main character. On the other hand, Tarzan of the Apes is a book written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, famous for his work in fiction, fantasy, and adventure stories. Burroughs published his book in 1914. McTeague and Tarzan of the Apes share some similarities in that they were composed before the First World War, and both authors were Americans. In this essay, a comparison between the two novels will be analyzed where different and similar visions regarding America from both authors will be manifested.
Despite the similarities mentioned above, some of their visions towards America and Americans differ. In his novel, Norris linked characters to animal instincts to describe them severally throughout the novel as if he was describing an animal. For example, the author described McTeague as a giant that carried a massive shock of blond hair six feet, three inches from the ground (Norris 2). In another description, McTeague is described as a ranging elephant in pain (Norris 115). He is also described as yelling like a hurt beast (Norris 181).
