Literary Analysis of the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God Vis-à-vis Gender Role
The novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston centers on Janie Crawford who has a quest to find true love. The novel was authored during Harlem Renaissance, which was a period when African American writers thrived in wring and arts, and sought self-identity (Collins 4). Janie tells of this quest of true love through her three marriages. While this novel looks into various subjects such as sexuality, racial discrimination, this paper will critically examine gender role vis-à-vis the experiences and life of Janie Crawford.
The novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God explores gender roles while focusing on the responsibility and expectation for each gender. For instance, Nanny has a strong belief that Janie should marry a man who will protect her; and should not marry for love (Frigo 3).
