In past decade both production of organic and biotechnology they been increasing. There has been consumer acceptance and of the use of the practices in the production of foods to sustain the world population. Consumers mostly in developed countries do enjoy a plethora of food choices due to increasing availability of both products of biotechnology and those resulting from biotechnology. The genetically modified crops were initially made available in the globe in the year 1996 to the manufacturers for use as some of the major crops. Since the initiation of the production of the genetically modified foods the production has exploded (Lipson 32). The main aim of this work will be to compare and contrast organic and genetically modified products.
Genetically modified foods result from the alteration of genes of specific system of the organism which helps in production of food which is viewed as modified product. The adoption of genetically modified technologies has led to the production of food stuffs in the United States to comprise of genetically modified ingredients. The introduction of the GM in the year 1996 has enabled the production of advanced crops. The resulting products are drought and pests resistance which enhance the growth of the country’s economy (Miller 24). Therefore these products of biotechnology have led to better economy than when compared to their counterpart organic foods.
However, the industry of organic foods production has also experienced growth and most of the organic items and products can be food in most of the retail stores. Most of the population in United States have reported to be using organic products. There is also the expectation of the industry to continue to increase as its current annual growth is over 20% in the United States. Both the organic and genetically modified foods and their ingredients have been thus in the rise and availability made to the end users and also for use by the organisations which are producing the food products. There has the irony on the side of genetically modified foods as most of the consumers do have preference of products which lack GM ingredients (Lipson 48). The producers on the other hand have been producing voluminous foods from biotechnology and the users do have the knowledge that they have been using them without any notable reactions.
There is also a presented challenge on the organic side in that at the consumer level the markets for the organic products is well growing. The processing and production of the organic products has been view as more expensive and the resulting identity of the foods ought to be maintained. The increasing demand of the for the organic food products even when they are being sold at premium prices, there is still the need the meeting of the additional cost of supplying them through the increase of market premiums( Miller 52). There is substantial evidence that the sensitivity of the price of the products resulting from organic end to high at retail stores for some of the food categories.
Issues with the Environment and GM crops
Farmers and most horticulturalists have in the on look of practicing breeding of plants in the past decade but on the arrival of GM foods have resulted to the difficultness in the assessment of the long term impact to the surrounding. However, most of the concerns have been existing over the negative impact of GM foods and products as well. The GM introduces genes which are not native to the specific species and the entrance of these genes to the wild population will have a great impact to the environment.
The GMO crops they often engineered to produce pesticides or herbicides. Therefore there is the potential for the Crops from GMO origin to pesticide resistance in the pest and populations of most of the weeds. These will result in high populations of pest which will lead to the damage of the agricultural organisations and environment (Sanderson 45).
