Name Professor Corse Date of Submission Grendel's Mother plays many roles. She was much more meticulous and methodical. She was also deceptive, vengeful and monstrous. When a hero, Beowulf, approaches her, she already finds the right way to portray herself to earn his attention. Additionally, she utilizes her persuasion arts in convincing Beowulf to betray his associate man. This essay discusses the personality or the character of Grendel's Mother and the roles played by her. Grendel's Mother was an aggressive monster who had revenge against Beowulf for killing her son. (Thomas and Alfred 113-147) The Mother, however, did not have a name. She is often referred to as the other, "and now this other one arrives, this force for evil” (1340), spoken from Beowulf’s mouth. She is as wild as her son and even more vindictive than her son. She is set on getting revenge for her son's death and therefore revealing her powerful maternal instinct. It is suggested that Grendel's Mother is Cain's descendant, the very first killer introduced in the Bible. This asserts that she is connected immediately with evil. It is exemplified that Grendel's Mother is a Germanic warrior. (Pork and Thijs 7-26) Grendel's Mother reveals the values of possessing Germanic a warrior in the community following Grendel's death. She earns the title of "female combatant" or "warrior-woman," Adhering to the Germanic code of vengeance in asserting the ruined Æschere (Grendel's arm) as indemnification for her son's death. Grendel's Mother is a female warrior. Having implied that Grendel's Mother is a brave and fierce warrior, we can study how the Mother proves to be a worthy and dangerous combatant to Beowulf, the hero. (Dale and Corinne 435-449) When Beowulf reaches the place under the lake where Grendel's Mother is inhabited, she thrusts toward him using her terrible claws. She proves to be stronger than Beowulf by dragging him underneath the lake. She temporarily immobilizes the hero claiming to possess the thirty men's strength in him. Even the poet reveals it with a shocked tone, "No matter how brave he was / he might not yield weapons" (27). Grendel's Mother led Beowulf to her hall, whereby she could control her enemy. The Mother is an outcast. For instance, “she had been forced down into fearful waters / the cold depts." (1260). Grendel's Mother was never like human-like people. As mentioned earlier, the name of Grendel's Mother needed to be presented. This shows that she was being treated as an outcast at all-time even in the war.
