Importance of Asimov’s Laws of Robotics
Asimov’s Reason comments on robotic advancement as a phenomenon that would lead to the loss of human control. In the piece, Cutie begins by gaining curiosity about his own creation and existence, something quite unprecedented for robots. From the reading, Cutie becomes harder to control as further advancements are made. An inference may be made from the story that mechanically intelligent beings that are physically and mentally superior would be disastrous to the human race thus necessitating laws to govern interaction with technology.
I would argue that the reading points to the possibility of humans creating something superior to them. From the quote, Cutie confronts Gregory Powell and Michael Donovan with the idea that although robots are human creations, they have mental and physical advantages over human beings. This is affirmed when Cutie scoffs at the two space scientists claiming they are just a makeshift while he is a finished product (Conklin, 329). In a literal context, Cutie is self-entitled to superiority through his belief that he was created by the space energy convertor and thus builds robot cult around the device. Throughout this time, the two scientists watch helplessly confined in the house and arrested by their creations. Arguably, it is impossible for human beings to create something that intelligently superior to them. Though mechanically and physical superior to human beings, robots are creations of human beings thus subject to control by human beings. I would argue that it is impossible to create something with a superior intelligent quotient to human beings. It is evident that robots are mechanically and physically superior to human beings but not intelligent superior to human beings.
