Minimum Global Labor Standards
Introduction
International labour standards are a set of legal instruments establishing basic labor principles and the rights of workers at work. These standards aim to improve the global working conditions while still protecting both global employees and employers. Key areas covered by international labour standards are enhancement of occupational safety, employment policy and promotion, banishing of child labour, skill development, fundamental human rights, special workers, labour inspection, minimum wage, maternity protection, gender equality at work, and social security. Minimum global labour standards should apply to all global companies.
Why minimum global labour standards should be applied to all global companies.
International global labour standards advance the development of people as human beings. Unlike an inanimate product such as TV sets that can be negotiated, the international community states that labour can never be reconciled because it is not a commodity. Work contributes to a significant proportion of everyone’s daily life and stands crucial to every person’s wellbeing, dignity, and overall development as humans. Advancement in economies means increased access to employment and improved working conditions whereby employees work in freedom, safety, and dignity (National Research Council 12). As such, growth and development across nations is solely a move to advance human lives and must therefore be conducted with total respect to global labour standards. International labour standards have a duty to ensure that while economic growth is at the centre of nations, the main goal of promoting human life and dignity should not be abandoned by companies.
International global labour promotes a decent working environment whereby the aspirations of every human are met. International global labour standards enable access to suitable renumerated jobs, work safety and social cover, and increased adherence to personal development through set standards. More so, it offers global workers the freedom to take part in decisions affecting their day to day lives, equality of opportunities, and equal treatment of both men and women. According to the United Nations General Assembly's Decent Work Agenda, the four pillars of decent work globally are employment creation, rights at work, social protection, and social dialogue (Anastasova 4). Standards such as minimum age, abolition of forced labour, child labour, equal remuneration, discrimination policies, among others, have for many years promoted an appropriate working environment which has a result led to a creation of a decent workplace ideal for everyone.
The possible mechanism developed to implement the global labour standards.
Achieving the desired global labour standards demands actions both at the national and international level. Several mechanisms implemented to ensure that global standards exist mainly through international legal instruments on finance, trade, human rights, environment, and labour. Global labour has the mandate of providing that worldwide growth and development go hand in hand with the advancement of human lives (National Research Council 12). International labour standards have a unique structure of ensuring that all set standards are backed by individual states, workers, and employers. The global labour standards lay down all the basic minimum standards and collaborate with nations to ensure a level playing field, a clear and decent way of improving the economy, a transparent and open strategy of reducing poverty, and a safety net during the crisis.
Ideally, global labour standards have a framework that guides governments on how to protect labour standards. The basic principle is that states must not lower their labour standards as this would promote low wage, high turnover, and low skills, which in return prevents a country from developing high-skilled employment. International labour standards are designed as minimum standards that states should adopt to realize international competitiveness (Anastasova 6). More so, global labour standards have been made a vital aspect of economic growth and development. The increased compliance to global labour standards increases a nations productivity and overall financial performance. For example, minimum wage translates to more outstanding per
