“Marriage was an economic institution in which you were given a partnership for life in terms of children and social status and succession and companionship. But now we want our partner to still give us all these things, but in addition I want you to be my best friend and my trusted confidant and my passionate lover to boot, and we live twice as long. So we come to one person, and we basically are asking them to give us what once an entire village used to provide…” (Ansari, and Klinenberg). Love used to be mostly for convenience in older days. Now, people are not comfortable with the idea of being in a relationship for the sole purpose of convenience. In a sense, love has evolved. However, with evolution comes certain challenges. The new ideas surrounding love have resulted in people sometimes tending to feel left out, which has led them to get into or stay in loveless relationships for fear of the alternative. Regardless, love has always been a beautiful thing if we navigate correctly.
Most people cite personality or beauty when they describe their perfect partner. When it comes to the perfect partner, every person has preferences that vary. My preferred traits in a partner would be personality, humor, and intelligence. While these may look like cliché preferences, they are what I like. In terms of personality, the person should be kind to people from all walks of life despite their differences in race, gender, or sexuality. They may be the most beautiful person in the world, but an ugly personality would water all that down. Secondly, humor is an important trait for me because I like to make jokes and it would help if my partner understood my jokes. On the other hand, I also like to laugh and a non-humorous partner would drain my energy. Therefore, humor is a must-have. Lastly, I enjoy deep, meaningful conversations from time to time. However, I do not mean that our conversations should always take the shape of formal discussion about matters such as life, death, or aliens. Between the casual conversations, it would be nice to hold a deep conversation every once in a while, which would allow to connect on a deeper level than would small talk. To surmise, (Ansari, and Klinenberg) writes “When I've really been in love with someone, it's not because they looked a certain way or liked a certain TV show or a certain cuisine. It's more because when I watched a certain TV show or ate a certain cuisine with them, it was the most fun thing ever.”
As mentioned before, the dating scene is not easy. The situation is especially hardened, in American society, during elections. Around the election period, one gets to learn a lot about the person they are dating. For instance, if both partners are not on the same side of political ideology, they are likely to see each other’s’ ideas as inferior or backward. Usually this leads to the development of irreparable cracks in the relationship. More contemporarily, the pandemic has forced people to stay apart for extended periods of time. Distance may sometimes breed fondness, but, more often than not, it reveals weaknesses in the relationship. Therefore, the challenge here is the weakness of the bonds in most relationships. Ideally, a relationship should be fireproof, but this is hardly ever the case. In the world, in general, another challenge to dating in the modern life is the exponential growth of technology and social media. Due to pressures from people around the world on social media, people tend to conform to a certain image, which they then project onto their partners. The end result is that people end up falling with this image or an idealized version of the person they desire. As such, the relationship is not strong, because the two people in it are not the ones who fell in love in the first place.
In line with the development of modern technology has come a new form of dating; online dating. Much like an
