A Mother's Essence (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

To write a piece of insightful, nonfiction prose, a piece of literature, that highlights the one overriding characteristic of a person – that person’s ESSENCE. You will use the essence to help support the thesis. You will need both an essence and a thesis: they are two separate things, joined through support.
What NOT to do:
Don't write using clichés.
Don't try to tell the "life story" of the person you choose.
Don't choose a person you don't know.
Don't try to explain more than one essence of the person.
What TO do:
Write about someone you know well. You can interview her/him to get information to write about.
Write about her/his most distinguishing personality trait. What makes this person unique? What stands out?
Use that essence to provide the reader (and yourself) with some insight. (About humanity, about yourself, about a group of people...)
Go beyond mere portraiture and instead focus on what we might learn from this person's character
