Psychological Concepts in Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump is a 1994 film production directed by Robert Zemeckis that features a below-average kid, Gump, who has an IQ of 75(Zemeckis, 1994). For this reason, he is considered stupid by the society around him because he has difficulty understanding simple things. Despite these challenges, Gump's mother is strong-willed and helps him live through these adversities. He also meets a girl Jenny Curran, with whom they start a long-term life relationship, as depicted in the movie's plot. The movie's setting is paradoxical since it recounts Gump's past life as a below-average kid, unlike others. Connotatively, the film follows the American timeline explaining various psychological influences on the protagonist and other characters in the movie. With this in mind, this paper argues that the movie's plot and Gump's storyline resembles Erickson's eight stages of development. Also, psychological concepts of PTSD are seen with Lieutenant Dan Taylor-a veteran who survived the Vietnam War.
