Political System of Texas
The political system of Texas is currently divided into four branches namely the executive, the judiciary, the local government and the legislative branch. The Democratic Party dominated the politics of Texas for nearly 100 years, from after Reconstruction until the 1990’s. Here people operate under the Constitution of Texas and it consists of a unitary democratic state government and which operates under one president and also uses the Dillon Rule. It is so evident that politics in Texas has changed so much over time. Thus the main aim is to discuss whether my evaluation of Texas has evolved and also helped me change my views on this over the past semester.
Over the years, the legislative branch has been the most powerful branch of all the three main branches with the lieutenant governor being the most powerful office in the government. Texas governors do not have much power but as we all know, this is the most visible and highest paid positions in the government. Appointment of judges is usually a power exercised by governors until the next election is carried out and new judges are appointed to fill any vacancies available. In addition to that, power and authority is divided among various numbers of distinct officers which makes it difficult for any one individual to be fully responsible for the state’s executive initiatives.
Many non-governmental and non-partisan organizations have come together to form the public policy foundation of Texas of which they promote a system of regulatory measures, laws and also funding priorities concerning a given topic put forward by the government entity or even its representatives. Public policy therefore can be said to have taken a big part in shaping a wide variety of forces, from polls and election results to interest groups and institutions. For a long time now there has been the big question of who shapes the public policies and under what conditions. All in all, it turned out to be that in recent years the elites and the deep-pocketed donors played a big role in this process of policy making.
