Girls of Riyadh by Rajaa Alsanea
Rajaa Alsanea’s Girls of Riyadh is a narration of the Saudi culture and how it affects women’s life in Saudi Arabia. The author focuses on the personal lives of four college-age friends in Saudi Arabia; Gamrah, Sadeem, Michelle, and Lamees. In the book, the narrator reflects on various aspects of their life. Thus, the story navigates on the young Saudi women’s life, personal relationships, family pressures, and career aspirations. The author presents her stories regarding various aspects of the Saudi culture and the adventures of the four college girls in the form of emails which she sends out weekly to a large number of internet users in Saudi Arabia. In the book, Rajaa reveals various aspects of feminism which are portrayed by the four girls and the Saudi culture. Thus, the essay aims at analyzing the Alsanea’s narration using feminist approach.
Feminist approach is used by authors to represent certain societal values including gender roles. For instance, in the modern world, many authors use this approach in literature to demonstrate the way women are represented in the society. Rajaa’s Girls of Riyadh is one of the feminist literatures.
