Her experience leading slaves along the Underground Railroad was especially helpful because she knew the land well. She recruited a group of former slaves to hunt for rebel camps and report on the movement of the Confederate troops. With the start of the Civil War, Truth became increasingly political in her work. In 1872, she returned to Battle Creek, became active in Grant's presidential re-election campaign, and even tried to vote on Election Day, but was turned away.

Harriet began working as a domestic helper in the family home at the tender age of six years. Seven years later, she was enlisted as a farmhand to work the fields. Her injuries in her early teens would be with her throughout her whole life. What gave her the impetus to flee? Tubman opted to flee slavery in Maryland for freedom in Philadelphia after being sick and losing her master to death.
