Similarities between the books of Aeneid to Odyssey and the books of Iliad
Introduction
Homer clearly influenced Vergil. Apart from the well-known comparison, the use of epic poem as a way of uniting the mythical foundation of myth is an important correlation that bound. The heroes, the gods, descriptions of the battles and the similes points out an aspect of idealized historical oral storytelling tradition used by the Roman poet. Homer is the king of poet where Vergil draws the inspiration from. The first books of Vergil are established from the odyssey, while the last books ideas are drawn from Iliad.
Similarities between the books
The Aeneas-Odyssey comparison is an interesting one and easy to point out. Both are heroic, Odysseus being tricksters while Aeneas being diplomatic, the heroism enabled them to sail past the Scylla and Charybdis, the cyclops where odyssey formulate a plan and blinding them, the sirens and manner monsters they met along the way. Both have gods, they have god that love them and god that hate them, on one hand they are battered in an ocean and on the other raised to their glorious destiny. They like to tell detailed stories about their previous journey and the people they met. Both fought at the troy and are on their way to their homeland.
Second half of Aeneid is basically influenced by Iliad. The chapter begins where, Vergil begins by telling horror stories, Vergil also mentions heroes determined to meet their destinies and high pitched battles. Aeneid end recalls the Trojan War that involves the taste of blood and gore. The great revival of Aeneas is compared to Achilles. The Iliad is about the fall of troy whereas second half of Aeneid is about creation. Iliad and odyssey balances the scale in that Achilles returns the body of hector and odyssey takes revenge on the suitors. Destiny is the prime motivator in Iliad, Aeneid’s as well as the odyssey.
Both authors about wars, how destiny act as a prime motivator each one wants to reach their destination, both texts end with the death of the defending champion. Trojan is still portrayed as sympathetic, wandering victims and imperialistic invaders. Pillar of a fast growing empire is myth which is a motivation drawn from the Aeneid.
