Social intrigues are factors that determine the human dignity and if not positively held, leave a shameful and dejected relationship. While there may be other strong points that Senor C writes about in the novel there is a substantial negative impact that his social life reflects the reader. This paper will discuss the social aspects in Coetzee’s novel and show how they result into deterioration of the morals in the society. The novel begins with an old writer bumping into a young lady in a laundry room in the apartment where she lives. Infatuated though aware that they will never involve romantically, Senor C goes ahead and hires her as his typist. The manuscript entitled Strong Opinions she is to type, emerges to a series of essays that are not only deeply moral, but also soul-searching that occupies the leaves of every page of the novel. Although Senor C hires Anya on the basis of her charming beauty, he soon discovers that she has more to give than mere sexual appeal. Her direct critique of the writings she does for her earning. Moreover, the interest, he has on Anya's ideas, makes her consider herself as an intellectual to add on her physical beauty. Anya stays with her boyfriend who is intelligent, but arrogant and ruthless banker named Allan, who has begun reading the essays that her girlfriend types. The two friends argue over the essays and on Senor C’s design on Anya. Allan has a belief that the despairing Senor C is idealistically using Anya to advance his sexual Fantasies. On the contrary, Anya realizes that there is a better way of thinking apart from purely economic view that Allan has on human interaction. She holds that Senor C’s love for her is sincere and not lecherous. The issue leaves her trapped in an awkward situation between these two men. She feels trapped in between the two men and their opinions. Though she relates to both of them, their divided opinions are not making but rather breaking in the personality of Anya. A young man financially oriented in his views does not like the way the old Senor C tries to edge closer to his girlfriend and, therefore, criticizes his essays. The old man is also viciously in love with his typist whom he has not only been attracted by her beauty but has also discovered her intelligence. The path, to take for Anya, seems the only challenging obstacles but all signs show that she is interested in the old man. These clashing worldviews come to a sharp relief when the old Senor C asks Allan to work for him as a financial advisor. It does not take long when Allan reveals to Anya about the Spying program which he has installed in the computer of Senor C. He further discovers that Senor C is suffering from Parkinson’s disease and has planned to donate his all his wealth to animal welfare charity. Allan reasons that Anya and him are able to utilize the money than an animal welfare charity and schemes a plot to enable him to steal Senor C’s estate as soon as he dies. Though his boyfriend, Allan often bully Anya, she stands firm and forces Allan to drop his ill-fated scheme. Finally, when Allan rates at Senor C while he is drunk, Anya departs from both of them. The Coetzee’s novel viewed as an occasion meant to cause a problem to the contemporary neoliberal paradigms (Gee 61). His rhetorical strategies are better analyzed to understand the scene of address from which ethical claims find their voice. In the view of (Foucault 326), in order to understand the self-ethics as a relation to itself, the self-relation should be explored by way of rhetorical figure catachresis. Foucault further argues that the voice of ethics in the book develops when the terms, to which one relates to himself and his body and others and their bodies, are specifically subject to catachresis (338) The central character in the book is Senor C, an old author who is asked to write his opinions on what he thinks the world is at present. The man who addresses strong points ranging from political, philosophical to social, is finally caught up in an extraordinary moral dilemma. The relationship between Senor C and his typist impacts heavily on their social lives. On the side of Anya, her relationship with Allan changes and this also help the reader to understand the effects of harboring ill motives against other people. Senor C, on the other hand, has to fight with the schemes that Allan has with his bank account. Through these characters, the author creates an interesting literary game that invites readers and leaves them surprised due to its emotional power. Bold and funny and saddening but intellectually satisfying is the novel that takes a journey of the most acclaimed world writers. In Coetzee’s characters, are fond of rhetorical questions. The book has varying tones that are joyful at the beginning, but at last ends in a sad tone. It is the nature of most of the writings by Coetzee. Behind the writers, every paragraph writes (Foucault 318) The reader introduced to soft music that present joy and the future grief. The varying tones help drive the strong point of social relationship and interaction home. There is joy at first as Senor C attracted at first to Anya that leads him to employing her as his typist but this joy finally fades when Allan realizes the motives of the old man has his girlfriend Anya. He schemes many immoral things against Senor C may be to repay for the relationship that is developing between him and Anya that Allan is not pleased. The result leaves the audience in a sad moment as Allan rages on the old Senor C while the beautiful Anya departs
