Societal Rot in “Everything is Far from Here” by Cristina Henriquez
Cristina Henriquez, “Everything is Far from Here,” is a sad story that recounts the events around the life of an immigrant mother. The author does not give her a name and refers to her as ‘she’ throughout the story. The story begins with her arrival to the sanctuary she had been hoping to get to, but it does not feel like she thought it would. Her son, who she had started the journey with, does not arrive with her. She waits for him anxiously, and another mother assures her that he will come. Eventually, he never arrives! At the end of the story, ‘She’ is at the brink of insanity yet no one seems to care. She remains insignificant to the end. Indeed the rot within society has made us selfish savages who only care about our well-being.
In the story, ‘She’ arrives at the facility tired and beaten up by her journey, but no one pays attention to her personal need for medical assistance or the need to find her son. The journey they undertook was long and tiresome for everyone. It separated ‘She’ from her son yet on arrival at the site, “They tell her to sleep,
