The book, History of a Temptation, is a story on the history of spice trade that was told to both the conventional narrative of the economics and politics, and colonization as well as conquest, however, the story intimates the impulses of the individuals which both inspired and drove it (Turner, 2004). Moreover, Jack introduces the readers to the exploration of the desire which is a century old for the spice in food, in magic, religion as well as medicine, and of the attraction of the forbidden fruit that lingers in the trace of pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, mace, and ginger. Jack offers the readers a follow up of the spices through time, myths, literature, history and even archaeology.
Besides, in his book, Jack portrays the perspective of the spices over the century, was just a few individuals were willing to stir their homes with the spices. From the perspective of Jack, the readers are able to understand the reason why the spice trade prospered for a very long period of time (Turner, 2004).
