The Color of Water
What do we know about father-son relationships already from our study of Native Speaker? From our own lived experiences or observations?
The native speaker James had a strained relationship with his father. James and his stepfather were not close after he lost his biological father before his birth. His father was not always home hence they did not have a strong bond. Whenever he would come, James and his siblings could not jump into his laps because they feared him and they were too many siblings to seek his father’s attention. Most times he would pester his mother with too many questions that he was curious of and found them very difficult to ask his father.
The native speaker became more terrified of his father when he saw him butcher a cow during one of their religious rites. This also, instilled fear in him against consuming cow meat. For many years he did not acknowledge him as his father until Hunter, his younger sibling was born. His step-father Jordan, could never pay money for him and his siblings to study with other gentiles’ children.
