The Etymology of Night
Etymology is known as the study of a change in a specific word with time, while considering its origin and transition. This paper mainly aims at coming up with an etymology study of the word night. The paper will start with a modern definition of the word, and how it is currently used. The paper will thereafter from its original perspective and explain its transition and how it came to be into its original state. Lastly, the paper will show how the word was used in the past years. Thereafter, the paper will consider how the word has been used in the work of Chaucer, and how it is related to the work. The word night has a clear dictionary meaning. In most of the available dictionaries such as the Oxford English Dictionary, the word night is defined as the darkness period, which comes after the day’s period. The word is believed to have been in existence from the time human beings knew how to communicate. As a noun, the (Oxford English Dictionary) has defined night as between sunset and sunrise every twenty-four hours of a day. One of the most commonly used idiomatic expression of the word night is goodnight, which is usually used to wish others a peaceful bedtime rest.
