Cultural Relativism
Cultural relativism points out that there is no any single culture which is deemed better or worse than another and that some of the habits of one culture are considered valid within a given cultural framework Gensler (199). Moral relativism on the other hand applies to the logic of either right or wrong. The subject has led to a tremendous controversy since the relativist argues that there is no right or wrong. Therefore, this essay seeks to explore cultural relativism and its claims about possibility of moral truth as well as explaining the problems with cultural relativist.
As argued by Pojman and Fieser (293) there is no existence of any culture that is either superior or inferior to any other especially on matters pertaining the system of law, morality, politics, or customs of any community. Another critic is that the cultural relativists often exaggerate the level of diversity in different cultures because superficial differences always mask some of the underlying agreements (Gensler, 200). Other scholars further pinpoint that there is a limit of values that humanitarian culture must endorse or adhere. Furthermore, the moral relativist on the other hand is questioned of about their claims that there is existence of universal moral values.
