The Lottery
Arts, especially literary arts, are exact embodiments of real life. From time immemorial, before the dawn of human civilization and the development of languages, stories were told and even engraved on wall carvings as well as stone tablets. As Lorenzo (2014) stipulates, literature also existed before human beings were able to read and write and it provided a foundation upon which the beliefs, traditions, and above all humanity’s culture developed and transformed over the years. Literature is a product of art through which everything that happens in societies is recorded and learned. Literature –poetry, prose, or fictional stories –are the reflections of words based on people’s tragedies, feelings, and desires. Despite its dynamism, endlessness, and multi-dimensionality, literature has a significant purpose in life (Lorenzo). “The Lottery,” by Shirley Jackson is a fictional literary art that depicts an ancient society where people are so preoccupied with traditions that they would resist any change even it is necessary. In this essay, the fictional society’s perception of cultures and how such views affect their judgment are explicitly discussed. Also, an evaluation of the themes –obsession with culture and individual vulnerability –is made to investigate its conformity with contemporary societies’ perception of tradition.
