Why Hamsterdam Was Bound to Fail Literature Essay Paper (Essay Sample)
America’s drug war has been raging for years. Some of the efforts to fight crime and help addicts have been successful; many have not. We saw in scenes from The Wire what happened when drug use was decriminalized and isolated to designated zones where dealing and using were allowed but violence was not. Think about how the Hamsterdam experiment began, progressed, and was taken apart. What was at stake in creating it? What was at stake in shutting it down? Who did/do those decisions affect?
The Big Question
Was creating Hamsterdam the right thing to do for the Western district? Why or why not?
Your Task
Decide whether creating Hamsterdam was the “right” thing to do or not, and support and explain your point of view using evidence from the texts. Use examples from The Wire as your primary text, and then use secondary evidence from the supporting articles to comment on what we saw in the show. Also, as you address the topic, make sure you include in your discussion a clear explanation of what “right” is in this context (i.e., ethically right, realistically right, tactically right, or something else).
A well-developed, well-organized, and well-focused essay will have the following:
- an original title that shows your point of view
- an introduction that provides the necessary background information (i.e., general info about the drug war, Baltimore, and this arc of The Wire) needed in order to understand your essay
- an on topic, complete, and concise thesis that presents your answer to “the big question”
- several well-organized body paragraphs supporting your central argument, including a paragraph in which you address the counterargument
- properly introduced evidence from the text and thorough explanations of the significance of that evidence ********(minimum of 4 citations from The Wire and citations from at least 3 articles – 2 of mine and 1 from your own independent research, at a minimum)
- a conclusion that answers the “So what?” question in a way that moves the conversation forward
- three successful examples of noun phrase appositives & four successful examples of subordination
- grammatically correct usage of coordination & parallel structure
- MLA format layout, parenthetical citations, and a properly formatted Works Cited page
- careful proofreading that eliminates any sloppiness errors (excessive sloppiness errors can result in a grade of No Pass

Why Hamsterdam Was Bound to Fail
Over the last five decades, drugs have been of great concern to American Law. The war on drugs and its use have played vital roles in the public policy, culture and politics of this nation, as well as in the daily lives of millions of its people. The television series, The Wire, portrays an ideal plan of action christened “Hamsterdam” in which law enforcement officers allow drug trade to take place in isolated places, and only those places, without fearing arrests in Baltimore, Maryland. Hamsterdam is the corruption of Amsterdam, which one of the cities where small amounts of drugs are legal. Of cardinal significance, Hamsterdam is shown seemingly as a panacea to the myriad of social evils intrinsically linked to drug trade such violence. The fictional story, however, seems to only be pragmatic in an ideal society and not practical in real life. As noble as the Hamsterdam’s actions and intentions were, Hamsterdam was not the right thing to do for the Western district as it would have generated into severe problems than they are witnessed in the TV series, The Wire.
