“The Marrow Thieves”: Dreams are in one’s Marrow.
Cherie Dimaline’s dystopian novel, “The Marrow Thieves”, is set in the futuristic world – a world that is imminently approaching. The anticipated world is completely ravaged with global warming –a prelude to natural calamities like hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis that have deprived the non-indigenous Canadian citizenry the ability to dream. Fortunately, the only cure for the looming apocalypse lies with the native North American populace. The direly needed remedy is their born marrow. The indigenous population inevitably run for lives as government’s recruiters hunt them for their precious born marrow (Briggs and McKenzie). Dream metaphorically symbolizes the hope to live despite the tribulations and mysteries that both the indigenous and non-indigenous populations face in the world. Eventually, “The Marrow Thieves” holds that the marrow solely determines one’s ability to dream –a precursor to an intertwined link between the spiritual and the material worlds.
