Their Eyes Were Watching God novel, is written by Zora Hurston in the year 1937 who is an African American writer during the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance period favored African-American writers who had an opportunity to express their views in the market. Zora Hurston was born in the Southern part of the United States in Alabama. She later on moved to Florida at a young age, as she was in love with literature and the anxiety to master the calming culture in modern world. At a tender age, Zora joined Barnard College, where she studied anthropology in the New York City.
Hurston’s prose depicts a remarkable comedy gift of the books climax. The novel particularly majors on Janie Crawford from a teenage age into a woman with focus to own her destiny. As much as Zora wrote the story in seven weeks, Their Eyes Were Watching God novel remains with several themes worth of various experience.

Their Eyes Were Watching God is a novel based on Janie Crawford life and experience as a black woman who resides in the American South. Janie’s life is a quest to search for true love as she narrates her story of his three marriages to her friend Phoeby.
Contextual Argument
Janie spent most of her time as a child at Nanny’s place, who is her grandmother. Nany, a former slave has good plans for her daughter as she expects the best out of her. Nanny stays focused to his desires as she is in an attempt to gain financial security and social standing in her life after seeing Janie kissing a boy. After the incidence occurring, Nanny links up Janie with Logan Killicks the first husband to Janie. In return Logan mistreats Janie and has hopes to be adhered to her as the husband (Johnson, Bahr, Garratt, Latocha, Mohler & White, 213). However, Janie stands firm and refuses to adhere to the mistreatment by Logan. As Logan threatens to kill Janie, she eventually runs away with Jody Starks to Eatonville, Florida.
“Yes, she would love Logan after they were married. She could see no way for it to come about, but Nanny and the old folks had said it, so it must be so. Husbands and wives always loved each other, and that was what marriage meant. It was just so. Janie felt glad of the thought, for then it wouldn’t seem so destructive and mouldy”. This quote depicts Janie image as seen by making the decision to settle in a marriage with Logan. However, Janie has hopes in Nanny’s words as she will fall in love after marriage with her husband, in contrary to majority of women in the modern society who marry for security reasons. In the novel Janie is purely interested for love as a black woman as she greatly feels that it is her own right to marry the right person in life. Unfortunately, due to lack of information and experience in a relationship, Janie is confused by the decisions from Nanny.
In Eatonville, Florida, Zora Hurston grew up under the care of her guardian’s care throughout his childhood. Janie gets encouragement from Jody, and she decides to get married by Jody. Janie has great expectations from her husband as she feels he will make her happy again after being mistreated by Logan. As Joe is in dire need to gain political and entrepreneurial take over across the town as he became a mayor of the town and owner to the main store. During the tender marriage stages Janie feels his love for Joe but with time she felt restrained through his ambitions as he saw her wife as person of no importance to his success (Johnson, 134).
“She stood there until something fell off the shelf inside her…it was her image of Jody tumbled down and shattered. But looking at it she saw that it never was the flesh and blood figure of her dreams. Just something she had grabbed up to drape her dreams over… She found she had a host of thoughts she had never expressed to him, and numerous emotions’ she had never let Jody know about”. From the quote it depicts Janie’s realization over his marriage as it was meant to be. As a woman, Janie realizes that Jody has no need to know her as a person. Hence, it comes in mind as a frustration of the women in the society who expect love in the marriage but, it turns out being the opposite.
Eventually Jody becomes ill, and Janie stands firm over her husband’s allegations as he beats her up in public at the store hence making her to cease from talking of their marriage. Immediately as they end up their conversation Jody passes away but Janie does not mourn over her husband’s death. While working in Jody’s former store, Tea Cake marches in and flirts Janie and in conclusion he invites her for a checker’s game. “He drifted off to sleep and Janie looked down on him and felt a self-crushing love. So her soul crawled out from its hiding place”. From the novel it is revealed that Janie allows herself to trust Tea Cake, shortly when he won a stake at his game play. Where Tea Cake sacrificed to fight a man in favor to win since, he had promised to support Jane with little cash (King & Selzer, 187). Hence, Janie has no worries over her love with Tea Cake as she has evaded violation.
Janie and Tea Cake’s marriage at Everglades is not perfect as Tea Cake takes cash from her wife, beats her up several times. As he wrestles with Nunkie, a girl in Everglades town with the help of Mrs. Turner who intervenes their marriage consistently and advices Janie to opt out of her marriage for her light-skinned brother. The opinions made illustrate tremendous racist views in the Everglades town where Janie stays as a black woman who is expecting great love from her marriage.
