Theories of Migration
The two main paradigms of theories of migration are functionalist and historical-structural migration theories. Functionalist immigration theories include; ‘Push-Pull’ Models which assumes that economic, environmental, and demographic factors push people out of places of origin and pull them into destination places. Also Neoclassical and Human Capital migration theory which is based on the assumption that social forces tend towards equilibrium and that migration is a function of geographical differences in supply and demand of labour and it’s a process which optimizes the allocation of production factors. Human Capital theory points out that people vary in terms of personal skills, knowledge, physical abilities, age and gender and so there will be differences in returns on investments.
