As a primary source of information, Thomas Nast utilized the in "The American River Ganges" to correct the Americans of the 1800s on the wrongs that the Roman Catholic had done in suppressing the Protestants. The first document on this idea was produced in 1867 when Nast adopted the cartoons that John Leech had used in The Publisher, an English Publication of the early 1800s (Gupta, 452).
Why do you think the document was drawn?
The cartoon on “The American River Ganges” that Nast drew was about the religious struggles in the United States. Being one of the fighters of freedom through the Harper’s Weekly, I think Thomas Nast drew the cartoon of the crocodiles (a representation of the clergymen in the Roman Catholic) who tries to capture the all the children. I feel that this was a more of freedom fighting than attack to the church (Justice, 200).
